Innovative mind behind BioSapien

Driven by a strong love for the medical field, the female founder — Khatija Ali — is an innovative mind behind BioSapien; aimed to translate complex medical and scientific information into high-performance deliverables.

Blending medicine with philosophy, Khatija is dedicated to developing innovative healthcare solutions. With 4+ years as a medical educator, she has mentored 10+ graduates into residencies. Additionally, she has 2+ years of experience building companies at HB and 15+ years in various professional roles.

The Birth & Early Journey of BioSapien

The journey from a medical background to the business world started in 2008. It was the time when 18-year-old Ali was studying philosophy and physics in Canada while running an HR staffing company with her dad. But life took a challenging turn when her father was diagnosed with colon cancer. Ali spent nearly two years caring for him, trying every possible treatment, but he sadly passed away in 2011.

This incident inspired her to become a doctor. However, during medical school, she discovered a deep passion for surgery. Then, tragedy struck again—this time, her aunt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and then passed away. This led them to research and realize that surgical suture materials could be used to deliver medicine. That moment changed her path—she left surgery behind and decided to focus on innovative drug delivery solutions. This was the beginning of BioSapien.

The Backstory

Ali returned to her region, UAE, noticing the growing interest in biotech and the potential to build an ecosystem. With the proper infrastructure, she believes that she can create something impactful alongside her company.

Initially, she didn’t know much about biotech startups, but her curiosity pushed her to learn quickly. She teamed up with venture capital firms, analyzed other biotech companies, and gradually started working on her own vision. Working sleepless nights Ali built a solution.

The solution- BioSapien

Khatija Ali is the CEO & founder of BioSapien, based in San Diego, California. Founded in 2018, BioSapien focuses on developing innovative therapies to transform patient care.

BioSapien offers a flagship product, MediChip™, a drug delivery, 3D-printed, slow-release delivery platform attachable to any tissue with minimal systemic side effects. By delivering medication directly to the tumour, MediChip™ minimizes side effects often associated with systemic chemotherapy. Local delivery also requires fewer quantities of drugs to be used while still effectively treating the tumour.

Working around the clock, Ali invented MediChip®. Her innovative invention, MediChip™ technology, uses 3D printing to send chemotherapy directly to a tumor, reducing side effects. This biodegradable chip releases medicine over time and can treat cancer and possibly other conditions.

Innovating Minimally Invasive Drug Delivery platform, BioSapien is on a mission to help 1 million patients by 2035, focusing on improving their health and lowering medical costs. The company wants to be the leader in providing safer, less invasive cancer treatments that make a real difference in healthcare.

Overcoming Challenges

Raising money has been one of the toughest challenges in Ali’s journey. But her belief that failure is a part of the path to success kept her going, even when things seemed impossible.

While building her company, Ali faced many setbacks, including failed experiments, a poor pitch to investors, and even times when she couldn’t pay her employees. She sometimes questioned whether she should give it all up and take a regular job.

However, each time that thought crossed her mind, she reminded herself of the bigger picture—the potential to save lives. This motivated her to push forward, fix mistakes, and keep trying. Instead of losing hope, Ali turned every setback into an opportunity to learn and get better.
