ESR Group Limited, a Hong Kong-based real asset owner and manager, and STACK Infrastructure, a Japan-based digital infrastructure firm, have begun construction on a new data center as part of a multi-phase 72-megawatt (MW) campus in Keihanna, in Japan’s Kansai region.
According to ESR’s statement on Monday, work has started on the first building, KIX01A, which will offer 18 MW of IT capacity. The facility is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2027.
The facility has been pre-certified LEED Gold for its sustainable building design and construction practices.
The development of KIX01A expands ESR and STACK’s partnership in Asia Pacific (APAC), which also includes a 48 MW data center project in Incheon, South Korea, aimed at supporting the growing demand for artificial intelligence, cloud services, and 5G+ technologies.
KIX01A is part of ESR’s broader data center pipeline in Japan and contributes to its 2 GW of secured land and power across the APAC region.
Meanwhile, ESR’s first hyperscale site, the 25 MW Cosmosquare OS1 Data Center in Osaka, is scheduled to be operational by June 2025.
“Building large-scale campus developments is a unique capability of ESR through our deep in-market expertise in accessing land and power and long-term commitment to collaborate with the local community to maximize positive impact for all stakeholders,
“By combining our strengths and capabilities with STACK, we can meet our hyper-scale customers’ needs in a high-growth market and drive value for our investors,” said Stuart Gibson, ESR Group Co-founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer.
Diarmid Massey, Chief Executive Officer of ESR Data Centers, added that Kansai has a growing demand for modern, energy-efficient digital infrastructure.
“The ESR-STACK Keihanna campus will deliver state-of-the-art data center capacity, scalability, and flexibility to support hyperscalers and large enterprises in a market that is expected to witness a doubling of critical IT load capacity within the next five years,” he added.

Pithambar (Preet) Gona, Chief Executive Officer of STACK APAC, emphasized that Japan remains one of the most essential and fastest-growing data center markets in the Asia Pacific region. He noted that STACK’s expansion into Kansai, alongside its existing 36 MW campus in Tokyo, underscores the company’s commitment to delivering critical capacity in strategic locations across the APAC region.
“Together with ESR, we are proud to bring our proven delivery model and client-first approach to Kansai, enabling hyperscale clients to grow with confidence in this high-demand market,” Gona said.
The 72 MW ESR-STACK Keihanna campus will offer strong power and network connectivity, ensuring high reliability for hyperscale, cloud, and large enterprise customers.
Customers will have the flexibility to choose from a range of solutions, including colocation and customized build-to-suit options. The campus will also support evolving workloads with higher rack densities and industry-leading standards in power usage effectiveness (PUE), water usage effectiveness (WUE), and sustainable building practices.
