Samsung and SK Telecom Join Forces to Build AI-Driven 6G Networks

Samsung and SK Telecom have made one of the biggest moves yet toward AI-powered 6G networks. The two Korean tech giants signed an MoU to develop artificial intelligence-based radio access network (AI-RAN) technology, putting them in a leading position for next-generation wireless infrastructure.

This partnership aims to transform how cellular networks function, using AI to boost efficiency and performance. It could pave the way for ultra-high-speed connectivity across both urban and rural regions.

Samsung and SK Telecom are making a major push to use artificial intelligence in the next generation of wireless networks. The two Korean giants have signed a new agreement that could reshape how 6G networks function by combining Samsung’s AI research strength with SK Telecom’s extensive network infrastructure.

Under the memorandum of understanding, AI-RAN (artificial intelligence-based radio access network) technology became a key part of their 6G vision. Instead of today’s base stations that operate on their own, AI-RAN enables a smart connected network where multiple antennas work together in real time, predicting interference and optimizing data flow before issues arise.

Through field-focused collaboration with SKT, we will be able to verify the effectiveness of AI-based wireless technologies in real-world settings,” Samsung Executive Vice President JinGuk Jeong told reporters. The partnership gives Samsung access to SK Telecom’s nationwide network for testing, while SK Telecom gets early access to Samsung’s cutting-edge AI wireless technologies.

SK Telecom’s role extends beyond just providing testing grounds. “The convergence of AI and wireless communications will be crucial to 6G competitiveness,” said Takki Yu, Vice President of SK Telecom’s Network Technology Office. The carrier brings years of operational data and real-world deployment experience that Samsung’s lab-based research can’t replicate.

This partnership builds on the progress both companies have already made through the AI-RAN Alliance, an industry group promoting AI-powered wireless technology. Earlier this month, Samsung and SK Telecom had their joint proposal for AI-based channel estimation approved as an official work item, giving their technology a head start over competitors.

Samsung has been steadily strengthening its 6G expertise since it created its Advanced Communications Research Center in 2019. The company has released important 6G white papers and demonstrated AI-RAN technology at Mobile World Congress 2025, helping it establish a strong leadership role in the future of communications.
