Starlink, the satellite internet service by SpaceX and supported by Elon Musk, is now officially available in the United Arab Emirates. It adds a new internet option in a market mainly dominated by fibre and mobile networks.
The service offers two main home plans. The standard plan costs AED 300 per month, while a cheaper Residential Lite plan is available for AED 230 per month. There are also business plans starting at around AED 248 monthly.
Unlike companies like Etisalat and du, which use fibre cables and mobile towers, Starlink works through satellites in space. This allows it to provide internet even in remote areas where traditional networks are not available.
This makes Starlink useful for places like deserts, offshore locations, and temporary setups where regular internet connections are difficult to install.
To use the service, users need to buy hardware first. The Standard Kit costs AED 1,465, and the Mini Kit costs AED 1,099. These kits include a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, and cables.
Starlink also offers Roam plans for people who need internet in different locations. These plans start at about AED 185 per month for 100GB and go up to AED 605 for unlimited use, making them suitable for travelers and remote workers.
In terms of speed, Starlink may not be faster than fibre internet in cities, where traditional providers usually offer better performance.
However, Starlink’s main advantage is its flexibility and wide coverage. It can work almost anywhere as long as there is a clear view of the sky.
For most people in the UAE, Starlink will likely be used as a backup or additional internet option. It is especially useful for remote areas, businesses needing reliable backup, and people who need portable internet.
