Sanjay Khanna appointed Chairman and MD of Bharat Petroleum

Sanjay Khanna, an experienced executive in the energy sector, has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), India’s second-largest government-owned fuel retailer.

Earlier, he was working as Director (Refineries) at BPCL and was also serving as interim CMD after G. Krishnakumar retired on April 30, 2025.

BPCL said in a stock exchange filing that Khanna has now officially taken charge after his appointment was approved by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

“In terms of the letter dated April 9, 2026 from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), the appointment will be with effect from April 9, 2026 till the date of his superannuation i.e. till 31.05.2029 or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” it said.

Khanna has a degree in chemical engineering from NIT Tiruchirappalli and a postgraduate degree in finance from the University of Mumbai.

At BPCL, he has worked in many important roles, including leading the Kochi and Mumbai refineries. He has been serving as Director (Refineries) since February 22, 2022.

He was also one of the candidates interviewed by the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) on February 1, 2025, to choose the next CMD after Krishnakumar.

Khanna is also a board member of Bharat PetroResources Ltd, Petronet LNG Ltd, and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. He also serves as the chairperson of the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
