Google and VNG Launch New AI Lab in Vietnam

Google, VNG, and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City announced on May 4 that they are starting a new Applied AI Lab in Vietnam through Saigon AI Hub.

They said that Google Labs and AI Future Fund will support selected teams at the hub. These teams will get early access to Google’s technologies, technical help from Google and DeepMind, and may also receive funding.

This new initiative is the first of its kind in Vietnam. It aims to help local researchers turn their ideas and theories into real-world solutions that people can use.

Josh Woodward from Google said this partnership will help Vietnamese researchers build solutions that can be useful both in Vietnam and around the world.

Le Hong Minh from VNG said that even though Vietnam has talented people, AI research has been limited due to a lack of proper resources and infrastructure. This partnership aims to solve that problem.

The Applied AI Lab will work on important areas like language technology, computer vision, human-robot interaction, healthcare, and cybersecurity. Each team will create research papers and at least one working product.

Saigon AI Hub plans to grow this program and become a major AI research center in Vietnam. It will be supported by better infrastructure, global partnerships, and possible funding for startups.

This initiative also supports Vietnam’s larger goals, including its national AI strategy for 2030 and new AI laws, which aim to make the country a strong AI hub in the region.
