Alibaba CEO Confirms Departure of Qwen AI Division Head

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said on Thursday that it will create a new task force to speed up the development of its foundation AI models, after the head of its Qwen AI division, Lin Junyang, resigned.

The company said in a letter to staff that the new task force will be led by Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu, Group Chief Technology Officer Wu Zeming, and Alibaba Cloud CTO Zhou Jingren. They will bring together resources from across the company to support the project.

Zhou will continue to lead Tongyi Laboratory, Alibaba’s AI research division, and manage its ongoing projects, the letter said.

The announcement came a day after Lin posted on X that he was stepping down from his role at Qwen. He is the third senior Qwen executive to leave this year.

In the staff letter confirming Lin’s exit, Alibaba said it will dedicate more resources to strengthen its AI development efforts.
