Apple Expands in India: Tata and Foxconn Boost iPhone Production Capacity

Tata Electronics has recently started operating a new plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, where it will assemble older iPhone models on one production line. Meanwhile, Foxconn is set to begin initial operations at its new $2.6 billion plant near Bengaluru within days, starting with one line to manufacture the iPhone 16 and 16e. The plant is expected to be fully completed by December 2027 and is capable of employing up to 50,000 people when running at full capacity.

As the U.S. tariff war affects Apple’s manufacturing in China, the company is accelerating its shift to India. A new iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu has started production, and another plant in Karnataka is expected to begin shipments in the coming weeks.

According to Reuters, Tata Electronics has recently begun operating a plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, where it is assembling older iPhone models on a single production line.

Foxconn is also preparing to launch operations at its $2.6 billion plant near Bengaluru. The factory, which will produce iPhone 16 and 16e models, will start with one assembly line and can make around 300–500 units per hour. When fully complete by December 2027, the plant is expected to employ up to 50,000 workers.

These developments are part of Apple’s strategy to expand manufacturing outside China, which has been impacted by U.S. tariffs. In March, Apple shipped 600 tonnes of iPhones worth $2 billion from India to the U.S. Tata and Foxconn recorded their highest-ever production last month, with Foxconn alone shipping $1.3 billion worth of smartphones.

Foxconn Ramps Up India Operations

According to a PTI report, Foxconn has more than doubled its revenue in India, crossing $20 billion in FY25. Alongside this growth, the company has increased its workforce in the country by over 65%, employing around 80,000 people.

A source quoted by the publication confirmed, “Foxconn revenue in India has more than doubled to over $20 billion in the financial year 2024–25. The employee count has also gone over 80,000.”

These milestones follow reports that Apple may move the entire assembly of iPhones sold in the U.S. to India as early as next year. Apple is accelerating its shift to India to reduce reliance on China and navigate rising geopolitical tensions and trade disputes between the U.S. and China.
