Bangladesh Reaches for the Stars with Homegrown Rockets

Bangladesh has officially entered the space tech arena. On April 29, Bangladeshi aerospace startup DhumketuX unveiled Bidrohi, the country’s first domestically built commercial sub-orbital rocket.

Named after the iconic poem “Bidrohi” by national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the rocket embodies a bold vision of national pride and scientific advancement. Standing 6.1 metres tall, Bidrohi uses a two-stage propulsion system: a solid-fuel first stage and a liquid-fuel second stage. It is designed to carry payloads between 35 and 50 kilograms to sub-orbital space.

Nahiyan Al Rahman ‘Oli, founder and CEO of DhumketuX, explained the rocket’s commercial focus:

“We are coordinating with the government to set up a dedicated launch pad. This rocket will carry five nano-satellites, or CubeSats, designed by students. We’re also exploring brand partnerships for advertising aboard the rocket.”

The rocket is projected to fly 200 km with a 50 kg payload and up to 281 km with a 35 kg payload. After a short stay in space, Bidrohi will return to Earth via parachute, landing in the Indian Ocean.

Beyond commercial use, Bidrohi also supports scientific research, equipped with advanced sensors for atmospheric and climate studies. As a tribute to national heritage, the rocket will feature:

  • Engravings of 200 million Bangladeshi names
  • Five national symbols
  • A “secret payload” that remains undisclosed

DhumketuX plans to tour the rocket across eight central locations, starting in Mymensingh, to engage the public and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
