Equinix Expands Malaysia's Presence with KL1 Data Center Upgrade

Equinix, a global digital infrastructure company, has completed the second phase of its KL1 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Located in Cyberjaya, within the Multimedia Super Corridor—a government-designated zone to promote Malaysia’s digital

Equinix said businesses can easily connect and share data across Southeast Asia with this new expansion, its substantial presence in Singapore and Johor, and upcoming plans to enter Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

The new expansion adds 450 cabinets to the KL1 data center and was completed to meet the growing need for digital infrastructure in Malaysia.

Since starting its operations in 2024, Equinix has gained global and local customers from different industries, including cloud and IT services, media, businesses, and network providers.

“We’ve seen good progress over the past year, with both our Kuala Lumpur and Johor data centers becoming more popular with local and international businesses.”

“Completing KL1’s second phase within the first year of our operation in Malaysia signals our deep commitment to helping the nation become a strategic location in the region’s digital economy,” said Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Malaysia, Equinix.

Equinix’s growth in Malaysia shows its strong commitment to supporting the country’s digital future for the long term.

With more businesses showing interest in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, the company said it will continue to help them by offering fast, flexible, and eco-friendly digital systems that are well-connected worldwide and support cloud services.

As more businesses worldwide explore opportunities in ASEAN, the region needs strong and well-connected digital systems to support the growing need for better internet and data connections.

Thanks to its strong market access, good location, and growing manufacturing strength that supports supply chains, ASEAN has become one of the fastest-growing areas in the world for attracting foreign investment.

In 2023, ASEAN’s foreign direct investment (FDI) hit a record high of $226 billion. This amount could grow to around $300 billion each year by 2030.

Thanks to important trade routes between East and West, ASEAN exports are expected to grow by 6.7 percent each year until 2030, faster than the global average of 5 percent.

Equinix has connected its Malaysia data centers (KL1 and JH1) to its data center in Singapore using Equinix Fabric®. This creates a strong digital network linking over 1,000 companies across the region’s cloud services, IT, financial services, and other businesses.

This connection allows companies in Malaysia and Singapore to share data and resources easily, boosting digital collaboration and business growth across the region.

When Equinix enters Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, it will make it easier for businesses to exchange information and allow customers to run important tasks across multiple sites in the ASEAN region without delays.
