Exodigo inks $3M deal with LA Metro to map hidden underground

Exodigo, a company that develops underground mapping technology, has signed a deal worth about $3 million with LA Metro, the agency in charge of Los Angeles’ public transport and metro projects.

Through this agreement, Exodigo will use its technology to help find and map hidden underground structures, making metro construction safer and more efficient.

As part of the deal, Exodigo will help detect and map the foundations of buildings and bridges near the metro tunnels being built. It will also provide services to locate other underground infrastructure and give related support.

This agreement comes after a recent contract with Amtrak, the U.S. national railway, which hired Exodigo to map foundations under existing buildings.

Exodigo has developed a new commercial product focused on exploring and detecting underground building foundations.

The technology was first tested in a pilot project with Israel’s NTA on the M2 metro line, where Exodigo successfully identified the foundations of several buildings located next to the planned route.

Many older buildings in Israel and other countries don’t have clear records of their foundations. This creates a lot of uncertainty when planning new projects.

Big infrastructure projects often struggle because of missing or incorrect information about what’s underground — and in some cases, this has even led to serious accidents.

A striking example is the collapse of the Cologne City Archives in Germany in 2009 which happened during metro construction. The lack of proper underground information led to the disaster, causing loss of lives and massive financial and reputational damage.
