Google Cloud announced on Wednesday that it has increased, and will continue to expand, the computing capacity of its Jakarta cloud region to meet growing customer demand.
The company said in a statement that this expansion will help more organizations in Indonesia access cloud-based AI tools, allowing them to improve their competitiveness, boost employee productivity, and improve public services.
In 2020, Google Cloud became the first global hyper scaler to launch a cloud region in Indonesia.
Over the past five years, Google Cloud’s Jakarta region has added around Rp 900 trillion ($55 billion) to Indonesia’s economy and helped support nearly 92,000 jobs yearly.
In the next five years, it’s expected to add another Rp 1,400 trillion (US$88 billion) to Indonesia’s economy and support about 240,000 jobs yearly.
“Google Cloud’s Jakarta cloud region powers many essential services for Indonesian organizations, from Bio Farma’s research and development of vaccines to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s delivery of teaching and learning experiences, to digital banking, e-commerce, food deliveries, remote work, and more,” said Fanly Tanto, Country Director, Indonesia, Google Cloud.
The Jakarta cloud region is made up of large, high-capacity data centers that are connected and based within Indonesia.
These data centers hold servers, computer chips, storage, and networking tools. They provide the physical support for Google Cloud’s fast and reliable services. This setup works like a “digital brain and backbone,” helping keep businesses’ systems and apps running smoothly, safely, and easily accessible.
By moving their systems and applications from local servers to Google Cloud, businesses in Indonesia have saved over 20% on their yearly technology costs on average.
They have used the money saved to invest in data and AI projects that give them a competitive advantage and help grow their business.
The Jakarta cloud region gives businesses in Indonesia access to powerful Google Cloud tools like BigQuery and Vertex AI. These platforms make it easier for organizations to build and use generative AI and agent-based AI using over 200 top AI models, including Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, Meta’s Llama, DeepSeek, and more.
Businesses can also customize these AI models for specific tasks, make sure they only use trusted company data and easily add them to their everyday work, products, and services.
“Google Cloud was one of the first to bring cloud computing to Indonesia and has been helping grow the country’s digital economy for more than five years. While other big tech companies are just starting to enter the market, we’ve already shown our value and are now taking things even further,”
“Under Google’s Bangkit Bersama AI (Rise Together with AI) initiative to advance the government’s Golden Indonesia 2045 vision and National Strategy for AI, we are increasing the computing capacity of our Jakarta cloud region to address surging local demand for cloud services,” said Tanto.
She said that by expanding its computing power, the company now gives Indonesia and its businesses access to the latest silicon chips and software designed for AI.
The Jakarta cloud region is connected to Google’s global private network, which provides fast and reliable internet with little delay.
To help businesses grow or enter new markets, they can use Google Cloud’s Cloud WAN service. This service allows them to easily, securely, and affordably move large amounts of data or complex applications between 42 Google Cloud regions, their own data centers, or other cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Oracle Cloud.
The Jakarta cloud region has three zones, which lets organizations store and manage their data within Indonesia.
This allows organizations to use Google Cloud services confidently, speeding up their transformation while ensuring they follow local rules and industry standards for data storage.
