In a drive to further strengthen cloud infrastructure in Indonesia, Tencent Cloud is establishing a third Internet Data Center (IDC) in the country, part of a new commitment worth around USD500 million in infrastructure, resources, and investment in Indonesia by 2030. Through this investment, the company aims to empower local enterprises with advanced cloud and AI solutions that drive the digital economy and AI adoption.

Alibaba Cloud, as the first major cloud service provider to develop local cloud infrastructure in Indonesia, has three data centers in the country and has partnered with local institutions to train nearly 400,000 individuals in cloud computing and AI. Alibaba Cloud is also announcing that it plans to double this number to 800,000 by 2033 and will establish a Skills Centre at Universitas Indonesia to offer specialized training as part of its Alibaba Cloud Academic Empowerment Program (AAEP).

The commitments from Tencent Cloud and Alibaba Cloud are built around the two companies’ expansive cloud services contracts with GoTo Group, the largest digital ecosystem in the country, announced in September 2024, which will ensure that GoTo Group’s data remains onshore in Indonesia, directly supporting data sovereignty and enhancing data security for Indonesian users and businesses.

Patrick Walujo, CEO of GoTo Group, said: “We are deeply honored that President Prabowo Subianto has witnessed this agreement, marking a pivotal milestone in our efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure. By working with Tencent Cloud and Alibaba Cloud, we not only ensure that GoTo Group’s platforms are secure and resilient but also empower Indonesia’s digital economy with a major investment in critical cloud infrastructure and training to nurture local digital talents. With this collaboration, we aim to provide our users and partners with a solid foundation that supports sustainable economic growth, drives innovation, and positions Indonesia as a leader in Southeast Asia’s digital transformation.”

Poshu Yeung, Senior Vice President, Tencent Cloud International, said: “Indonesia is a dynamic economy with incredible potential, and we’re honored to have President Prabowo Subianto witness the formalization of this partnership. We aim to empower Indonesian businesses with advanced, scalable technology that fosters innovation and connectivity across communities.”

“This commitment aligns with the Indonesian government’s vision for Indonesia Emas 2045 (Golden Indonesia 2045) and underscores Tencent’s commitment to partnering Indonesia in its digital transformation journey to tap the immense potential of the AI revolution to empower local enterprises with reliable cloud and AI-powered solutions.”

Sean Yuan, Vice President, Alibaba Cloud International, said: “It is an honor to have President Prabowo Subianto witness this partnership, which underscores Alibaba Cloud’s long-term commitment to Indonesia as a vital market within Southeast Asia. We aim to support Indonesia’s digital ecosystem with localized, high-performance solutions that unlock new opportunities for businesses, boost economic progress, and accelerate the journey toward a digitally inclusive Indonesia.”

Through their expertise in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud will enhance GoTo Group’s digital infrastructure, creating a secure and scalable foundation that meets the needs of its extensive user base. The collaboration will also play a vital role in GoTo Group’s drive to foster a digitally inclusive Indonesia, strengthening its core infrastructure to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.

As a national tech champion, GoTo Group has been taking an active role in fostering the continuous growth of Indonesia’s tech talent through comprehensive on-the-job training initiatives for national university graduates. Some of these graduates have progressed from entry-level roles to senior leadership positions.

Tencent Cloud serves over 10,000 enterprises in more than 80 countries and regions worldwide and has recorded remarkable growth in Indonesia. The company has expressed its commitment to further strengthening its investments and resources in the country, across key verticals.

Alibaba Cloud has been serving the Indonesian market with three local data centers, acting as the trusted and preferred cloud service providers for a broad spectrum of businesses in finance, retail, logistics, entertainment, gaming and internet in Indonesia. Alibaba Cloud has also established an Anti-DDoS Scrubbing Center in Indonesia in 2021 to mitigate malicious attacks and reinforce cybersecurity.
