Malaysian carmaker Proton and ride-hailing company Grab Malaysia are expanding their partnership to support the e-hailing community better.
In a statement last Friday, Proton said the updated agreement will offer more car options for Grab drivers, including the Proton S70 and the premium X-Series models. It also comes with extra benefits to help drivers as they continue to earn through the platform.
This move builds on the success of the “Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners” campaign launched in November 2024, which has already brought in 220 leads and 148 new registrations for the Proton SAGA.
The continued partnership shows the strong demand for Proton cars among ride-hailing drivers. It highlights both companies’ shared goal of modernizing ride-hailing in Malaysia with vehicles that are reliable and affordable.
Grab drivers can now choose from a wider range of Proton cars, including options for the GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) services.
“Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector,” said Ong Chee Wooi, Deputy Director of Sales at Proton EDAR.
“Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers. For gig workers, this comprehensive program extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars,
“Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,” he added.
Rashid Shukor, Grab Malaysia’s Director of Country Operations and Mobility, said the company is excited to strengthen its partnership with Proton. He said this shows Grab’s strong commitment to helping Malaysians find flexible ways to earn a living.
According to him, the partnership has made it easier for Grab drivers to get access to cars, helping them earn income and support their families while meeting the increasing demand for rides.
“With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models — drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base,
“We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all,” he added.
Proton started as Malaysia’s first national car project, created to help grow the country’s economy and build a strong local car industry.
In 2017, Proton began a new chapter to become a modern, global car brand. This was made possible through a partnership between two major companies: Malaysia’s DRB-HICOM and China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
