HKT Opens AI Exchange to Connect Hong Kong Data Centers and Support AI Computing
Oct 30, 2026 | By Carmela Catilo

HKT has opened a new Innovation & Technology Centre and AI Exchange in Hong Kong to strengthen AI infrastructure and connect major data centers across the city. The facility aims to provide universities, research institutions and large enterprises with access to high-performance computing resources through a high-speed network.
The centre is located in Building 8 of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in the Lok Ma Chau Loop. It was officially inaugurated on October 28, 2026.
AI Exchange to Connect Major Data Centers
The AI Exchange will connect customers to major data-center clusters across Hong Kong through HKT’s 3.2-terabit-per-second AI Data Centre Inter-connect Superhighway.
The network is designed to support large-scale AI workloads by allowing organizations to access computing resources across multiple locations. This will help universities, research institutions and businesses manage demanding AI training and inference operations.
HKT also plans to use hollow-core fiber technology for the network. According to the company, this technology could reduce network latency by around 30% compared with traditional optical fiber.
Superhighway Rollout Planned in Phases
HKT is developing the AI connectivity network in phases. The company previously targeted the completion of the first phase between Lok Ma Chau and Tseung Kwan O by the end of 2026.
The network is also expected to connect with the planned Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster, with its first phase scheduled to begin operations in 2027.
The infrastructure will support technologies such as Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA), which helps multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) communicate and work together more efficiently across different data centers.
HKT and ASTRI Establish Joint R&D Lab
Alongside the AI Exchange, HKT has established a joint research and development laboratory with the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).
The HKT-ASTRI Joint R&D Lab aims to support research and help bring new technologies developed in the Northern Metropolis to commercial markets.
