JCorp and Sumitomo team up for renewable energy, healthcare, and industry projects

Johor Corp’s property arm, JLand Group (JLG), has signed an important agreement with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation. Together, they plan to work on projects in renewable energy, healthcare and major industrial development at Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC).

Johor Corp’s Patient Capital Division has signed another agreement with Sumitomo to work on low-carbon energy projects, district cooling systems, and better water infrastructure.

This partnership highlights Johor’s goal to create sustainable and future-ready utilities, supporting cleaner and smarter development.

The agreements, signed at the Malaysia Pavilion during World Expo 2025 in Osaka, aim to help Johor take a bigger role in Asia’s shift to clean energy and industrial growth. They also strengthen economic ties between Johor and Japan while supporting growth in the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

The first agreement will focus on building healthcare ecosystems such as senior-living communities, rehabilitation centres, and wellness hubs, along with developing next-generation industrial parks in Johor’s growth areas.

The second agreement was signed by JCorp’s Patient Capital Division. It focuses on renewable energy, low-carbon projects, district cooling systems, and better water supply networks.

These projects are meant to strengthen Johor’s green infrastructure and make the state more resilient and sustainable for the future.

The signing was witnessed by Lee Ting Han, Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs, and Human Resources Committee chairman; Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, president and chief executive of JCorp; and Hirokazu Higashino, chief executive officer of Sumitomo Corp Asia & Oceania.

Syed Mohamed said the collaborations reinforced Malaysia–Japan ties and positioned IBTEC as ASEAN’s innovation corridor, advancing investment, infrastructure and innovation while creating sustainable growth for industries and communities across the region.

Lee said that besides funding, the partnership will also bring new technology, talent development, and stronger supply chains, which will create jobs and help grow Johor’s green and digital ecosystem.

“The improvements envisioned in Johor are not just about infrastructure but about building long-term capabilities for the state’s economy,” Lee added.

Sumitomo, a Japanese company with over 100 years of history and businesses in energy, automotive, and infrastructure, plans to build 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity worldwide by 2030. It will use its experience in wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal projects across Asia and Europe to reach this goal.

At Ibrahim Technopolis in Johor, the industrial park project will focus on attracting high-value industries, taking advantage of Johor’s strategic location near Singapore.

In addition, healthcare investments are expected, such as health tech and medical facilities, though details have not yet been shared.

While the investment amount has not been revealed, both sides said a final agreement should be signed in the coming months.
