Solving this issue, the man has built a million-dollar company. An entrepreneur spirit never wants to sit quit and a curious spirit always tries to do something big and innovative, and the same happened with this man. His problem-solving behavior led him on the path to success.

About Shaun Seaman:

Meet Shaun Seaman, the founder and CEO of Mushroom Material. Shaun was born in South Africa, raised in Dubai, and pursued his education in Dubai and New Zealand. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Auckland, where he studied from 2009 to 2014, and also obtained a Diploma in the Design and Specification of Plastics in June 2013. Alongside these qualifications, Shaun has completed several other courses, further enriching his expertise.


Shaun’s entrepreneurial journey started:

Shaun launched Gedabout in 2018, a platform that assists travelers in coordinating their activities, scheduling events, and managing the travel plans of friends, family, and clients in addition to their own. He led the platform until 2019.

In 2019, Shaun took on the role of Founder in Residence at Entrepreneur First, where he guided and supported early-stage startups. In 2020, he worked as a product management consultant, helping tech startups take their products from the initial idea stage to market launch. While working with these companies, Shaun identified a critical issue, and by solving it, he has paved the way for his own success.

What issue Shaun noticed?

Shaun noticed that around the world, the government is banning the use of non-recyclable materials, especially targeting expanded polystyrene packaging, and companies are urgently seeking sustainable replacements.

He observed that companies are under pressure to find alternative packaging solutions. Additionally, there is significant social pressure to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly materials, but the available options that fulfill these requirements are limited.

He discovered that polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam, occupies 30% of landfill space and takes 500 years to decompose. As it breaks down, it forms microplastics that spread pollution across oceans, landfills, food sources, and even into the human body. He realized that the impact of this pollution was deeply concerning.

After observing this global issue, he saw an opportunity here, and his entrepreneurial spirit motivated him to find a solution. He relentlessly put his efforts and find out the solution.

What was the solution?

The solution was simple: to create a mushroom-based material that could replace expanded polystyrene directly.

He was determined to remove non-recyclable plastics from the environment by creating mushroom-based packaging materials. Driven by this mission, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey and founded his startup, Mushroom Material.

What is Mushroom Material?

In 2020, Shaun Seaman and Jotinder Singh founded Mushroom Material, a New Zealand-based company that offers an innovative mushroom-based material designed to replace expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam). This eco-friendly material is fully sustainable and 100% home compostable, ensuring it decomposes naturally within a matter of months.

This material is made by combining mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, with agricultural waste like straw, hemp, wood chips, cardboard, and more.

Shaun’s next move:

On his entrepreneurial journey, this man is on the path to success, and recently, the company has recently raised NZ$8.5 million in seed funding to develop its pilot plant. Their next vision is to build factories across Oceania, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. What makes his story truly inspiring is that, instead of overlooking the problem, he pursued a solution.
