MARii and Petronas Team Up to Boost Automotive Innovation with AI Predictive Maintenance

The Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and Petronas have formed a partnership to boost innovation in the automotive industry by utilising AI-powered technology for predictive maintenance.

In a statement on Thursday, MARii said it is working with Petronas Global Technical Solutions (PGTSSB), the part of Petronas that handles project management and technical services. Together, they aim to transform vehicle maintenance by utilising advanced technology.

The partnership will use Petronas’s Advanced Diagnostic and Prognostic Technology (ADaPT), which was created to improve the performance of equipment in the energy sector. Now, through a new project called ADaPTiV, this technology will be used in the automotive industry.

The collaboration was made official with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MARii and Petronas Global Technical Solutions (PGTSSB).

ADaPTiV uses artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data Analytics to give smart, real-time predictions about when vehicle parts might need maintenance.

This new technology aims to make vehicles more reliable, safer, and longer-lasting. It can also help save money by improving how and when maintenance is done.

ADaPTiV utilises smart AI to predict when a vehicle part may fail and provides suggestions to resolve the issue before a breakdown occurs.

With the help of IoT (Internet of Things), it collects live data from the vehicle’s components, enabling maintenance based on the vehicle’s actual condition—making it more accurate and efficient.

Using Big Data Analytics, the system provides useful insights to help vehicles run more efficiently and encourage smarter driving habits.

This project not only meets the tech needs of the auto industry but also supports Malaysia’s national goals.

ADaPTiV helps drive the development of Next Generation Vehicles and Mobility-as-a-Service, which are key components of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Automotive Policy 2020. It shows Malaysia’s strong commitment to smart and sustainable transportation.

“This strategic partnership with Petronas is a landmark moment for MARii and the future of mobility in Malaysia,” said Azrul Reza Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of MARii.

“ADaPTiV represents a powerful convergence of MARii’s automotive expertise and Petronas’ world-class predictive analytics, enabling us to build a more intelligent and reliable vehicle ecosystem,

“This initiative is a direct embodiment of our commitment to fostering local innovation and achieving the ambitious goals outlined in NIMP 2030 and NAP 2020,” he added.

Mazri Mohd Ali, Senior General Manager at Petronas, said the company is excited to work with MARii to bring its ADaPT technology to the automotive industry through the ADaPTiV project.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to technical and engineering excellence as we adapt and extend our solutions to new industries,

“We believe that ADaPTiV will deliver significant value by enhancing vehicle reliability, safety and operational efficiency driving cost savings and contributing to a more sustainable transportation landscape in Malaysia,” he added.

As part of their partnership, MARii and Petronas showed the first working prototype of ADaPTiV at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

The ADaPTiV project aims to enhance vehicle safety by enabling preventive maintenance to occur before problems arise. It will help parts last longer by predicting when they need care and reducing unexpected breakdowns. This will save users a lot of money, the statement said.

The statement noted that ADaPTiV could also benefit other industries by offering intelligent maintenance solutions that enhance operational efficiency and promote sustainability.

MARii is a government agency under Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). It acts as the main hub, coordinator, and think tank for the country’s automotive industry.

MARii works to improve technology, skills, supply chains, marketing, and after-sales services for everyone involved in the automotive industry.
