Malaysia-based energy company Meta Bright Group Berhad has announced that its fully owned subsidiary, Meta Bright Energy (MBE), has formed a partnership with ChargeHere EV Solution. This company runs electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This joint venture aims to help grow the energy business faster in Malaysia.
This JV aims to significantly expand the group’s footprint in Malaysia’s rapidly growing EV charging infrastructure market, Meta Bright said in a statement last Friday.
As part of the joint venture, Meta Bright and ChargeHere will create a new company called Meta Bright Chargesini Sdn Bhd. This company will focus on building, setting up, and running EV charging stations across Malaysia, especially in malls, hotels, homes, and business areas.
Meta Bright will own 51% of the new company, while ChargeHere will own 49%.
ChargeHere, known by its brand “ChargeSini,” already runs the largest EV charging network in Malaysia, with 935 stations in 300 locations and over 32,000 active users.
By teaming up, Meta Bright can use ChargeHere’s strong technical skills and experience to grow in the fast-expanding EV charging market.
“This strategic joint venture with ChargeHere significantly expands our capabilities within the renewable energy sector, particularly in EV infrastructure,
“It represents an essential milestone for Meta Bright, aligning closely with our environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and strategic focus on creating sustainable, recurring revenue streams,” said Derek Phang Kiew Lim, Executive Director of Corporate and Strategic Planning of Meta Bright Group Berhad.
With this new partnership, Meta Bright wants to take advantage of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which supports the growth of clean energy and green infrastructure. The plan includes building 10,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2025.
Meta Bright and ChargeHere have already picked out several approved projects to start right away, with main locations in Johor, Penang, and Selangor.
They are also planning more projects for the next phase of expansion, including important sites in Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, and Melaka.
These upcoming locations include well-known hotels, office buildings, and large residential condos, showing that the partnership is preparing for a large-scale rollout soon.
“Our immediate and planned installations will substantially broaden our operational footprint in key urban areas, supporting national goals and meeting rising consumer demand for accessible EV charging solutions,” Derek added.
In addition to the joint venture announcement, Meta Bright also announced the disposal of its wholly-owned Australian subsidiary, Meta Bright Australia Pty Ltd (MBA), for MYR 25.37 million ($5.96 million).
This decision comes as part of the group’s broader risk management strategy to mitigate exposure to cross-border operational risks, including geopolitical uncertainties, foreign exchange volatility and global economic conditions.
“The disposal of our Australian subsidiary allows us to redeploy resources towards our core operations in Malaysia, ensuring sustained long-term growth and shareholder value,
“The proceeds will also help us significantly mitigate the cross-border business amidst the current geopolitical environment, reduce our bank borrowings, and enhance our financial resilience,” Derek explained.
Meta Bright said the firm remains optimistic about the strategic direction and future growth prospects.
The joint venture with ChargeHere significantly enhances its renewable energy and energy efficiency portfolio, reinforcing the group’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative energy solutions, said the statement.
