Olympus Corporation Expands Prostate Cancer Care Business with Acquisition of BioProtect Ltd.

Olympus Corporation, a global MedTech company focused on endoscopy-based healthcare, has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire BioProtect Ltd. BioProtect develops medical devices designed to improve cancer treatment through advanced spacing solutions.

The acquisition is part of Olympus strategy to expand its presence in oncology and urology while focusing on advanced medical technologies, patient safety and better treatment outcomes. The deal is valued at $270 million with some payments to be held in escrow for a certain period. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the second quarter of 2026 subject to standard closing conditions.

BioProtect Ltd. develops implant technologies designed to improve prostate cancer treatment and support better quality of life for patients. Its main product, the Balloon Spacer system, creates space between the prostate and nearby organs to help protect healthy tissue during radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

After the treatment is completed, the implant naturally breaks down inside the body. Since its commercial launch in 2023, the Balloon Spacer has been used in more than 11,000 procedures worldwide. Studies suggest that the device helps patients preserve gastrointestinal, urinary, and sexual functions after treatment.

For Olympus Corporation, the acquisition supports its strategy of driving growth through innovation in the medical technology sector. The company sees prostate cancer treatment as an important area because prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among men worldwide. Around 1.5 million new prostate cancer cases are diagnosed each year, and the market for rectal spacer devices is expected to grow strongly over the next decade.

The acquisition will also help Olympus expand its healthcare portfolio into related medical fields connected to endoscopy, including gastrointestinal and urology care. The company aims to strengthen its offerings across different stages of patient treatment and care.

"We are pleased to welcome BioProtect to Olympus," said Seiji Kuramoto, Executive Officer and Surgical and Interventional Solutions Division Head at Olympus. "BioProtect brings a highly differentiated solution to prostate cancer care, with a compelling clinical value proposition and early commercial success. By combining BioProtect's strengths with Olympus' global reach and relationships with healthcare professionals, we believe we can expand access to solutions that support better patient outcomes and help clinicians to advance the treatment of prostate cancer."

"BioProtect is extremely excited to join Olympus as a key part of the company's continued expansion into urology and oncology," said Itay Barnea, Chief Executive Officer of BioProtect. "We look forward to integrating our differentiated spacing technology into the overall portfolio of Olympus. This represents a significant advancement for BioProtect, our physician partners and ultimately the patients we serve, combining innovative technology, clinical excellence and commercial scale to expand access to high-quality care for men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer."
