Chennai-based OrbitAID Aerospace has received the Indo-Australian Space MAITRI grant. With this funding, the startup plans to launch India’s first in-orbit docking and refuelling system, called the Standard Interface for Docking and Refuelling Port (SIDRP).
Under this partnership, OrbitAID’s SIDRP system will be launched as part of an international joint mission led by Australia’s Space Machines Company in 2026.
This mission will allow spacecraft to connect and refuel in orbit, helping improve satellite life and reduce space waste.
It will also mark the first commercial use of an Indian-developed docking and refuelling technology in space.
The project aims to standardize satellite refuelling systems, helping extend spacecraft lifespans and promote space sustainability.
OrbitAID will also lead the mission’s commercial ground fuelling operations, connecting Earth-based propellant logistics with in-orbit refuelling and establishing a complete propellant supply chain.
“By deploying our patented SIDRP technology and integrating ground fuelling with on-orbit refuelling, this partnership sets the stage for OrbitAID to transform satellite servicing and refuelling for both existing and upcoming missions,” said Sakthikumar Ramachandran, founder of OrbitAID.
OrbitAID recently opened its commercial facilities in Bengaluru to test proximity operations and docking (RPOD) systems.
The company also plans to launch a group of tanker satellites by 2027, which will act as fuel stations in orbit.
The startup has raised $2.04 million across two funding rounds, including a $1.5 million pre-seed round on January 15, led by Unicorn India Ventures with participation from the Tamil Nadu government.
