Sydney-based robotics startup Oscorp Energy has raised A$1.3 million (US$926,000) in pre-seed funding. The investment round was led by Atlas's AI VB fund from Europe, with additional support from Antler and Antipodean Capital.
Oscorp Energy is developing AI-powered vision and robotic systems that can identify and remove unwanted materials from waste streams in real time. The goal is to make recycling processes safer and more efficient.
The company's first focus is tackling lithium-ion battery fires in recycling facilities. These batteries are responsible for an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 fires every year in Australia's waste and recycling systems.
To bring its technology into real-world use, Oscorp Energy is working with battery recycling company Livium. The startup plans to deploy its battery detection and removal system at one of Livium's recycling sites to help reduce fire risks and improve safety.
Goswami said waste sorting remains physically demanding and hazardous in recycling.
“People are still doing too much of the most hazardous and repetitive sorting by hand,” he said.
“Our goal is to empower those workers with intelligent machines that make their jobs safer, reduce risk for operators and give facilities better visibility over what is moving through their lines.”
“We’re starting with batteries because the pain is urgent, visible and expensive for operators. But batteries are only the beginning,” Goswami said.
“The same intelligence layer can help waste facilities understand plastics, contamination and material recovery across the full stream.”
Founded by CEO Ani Goswami, Oscorp plans to expand its technology beyond detecting batteries. The company wants to build a larger Vision OS platform for waste and recycling facilities.
This platform will provide real-time information about the movement of materials through waste streams and help identify contamination issues, making recycling operations safer, smarter, and more efficient.
