PT KAI Teams Up with Zimbra to Boost Cybersecurity in Indonesia's Public Sector

Zimbra, a global email and collaboration platform, is helping improve cybersecurity in Indonesia’s public sector by working with PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI).

The duo said in a statement on Tuesday that this partnership highlights a growing shift toward sovereign, secure digital infrastructure to meet Indonesia’s rising demand for data protection and compliance.

As part of the partnership, PT KAI — Indonesia’s state-owned railway company — is upgrading its old email system with a more secure and flexible one using Zimbra.

With Zimbra’s Network Edition, PT KAI can better control its communication systems, keep data safe, follow regulations, and make its system more reliable across the country.

The new email system also works smoothly with PT KAI’s current IT setup, helping improve identity checks and coordination for over 28,000 employees.

“Our partnership with Zimbra allows us to meet our current compliance requirements while preparing for future challenges,

“With local deployment, full encryption, and seamless system integration, we are able to ensure operational efficiency across our national network,” said Bagit Airlangga, Manager of IT Application and Data Center, PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

Marcus Teo, Chief Revenue Officer at Zimbra, added that as institutions like PT KAI modernize their communication infrastructure under national data mandates, Zimbra is proud to provide sovereign-ready, secure email infrastructure tailored to Indonesia’s regulatory landscape.

“This partnership underscores our commitment to supporting both resilience and regulatory alignment with the public sector and beyond,” he added.

These projects show that public institutions in Indonesia are becoming more aware of the need to control their digital systems.

As government rules increasingly require data to be stored within the country, Zimbra’s secure, on-site platform provides a strong solution.

There are plans to expand Zimbra’s system further, possibly both within the current organizations and in other regulated industries.

This partnership is a good example of how to make digital changes that are secure and follow national policies, supporting Indonesia’s move toward a stronger digital economy.

Ivy Lee, Zimbra’s Vice President of Sales for Asia-Pacific, said the company is growing quickly in Southeast Asia, which now brings in nearly one-third of its global revenue.

She added that Zimbra works closely with governments, financial institutions, and small and medium businesses in countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

“The company has protected over a million new mailboxes in the past two years,

“We intend to invest in its SEA expansion in the coming months, supporting the region’s digital modernization efforts while helping organizations maintain control over their data and communication infrastructure,” she added.
