Rylo Raises $85 Mn in Round led by General Catalyst

Israeli startup Rylo has raised US$85 million in a new funding round. After this investment, the company is now valued at around $500 million.

The round was led by U.S.-based venture capital firms General Catalyst and Canaan. Existing investors like Cardumen, Vertex Precursor, and K5 also took part in this funding. Before this round, the company had already raised $16 million in two earlier rounds, taking its total funding to $101 million.

This funding comes after an important achievement for Rylo. The company received a license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Only five other companies have ever received this type of license. Rylo also stands out because it is the only one that provides its service completely through technology, without relying on human-operated relay centers.

The FCC license is very important because it lets the company earn money from a government-funded program instead of charging users directly.

Rylo earns about $1 to $8 for every minute of conversation on its platform. These payment rates are set by regulators and are reviewed every three years.

"At our current run rate of $100 million in revenue, we've only penetrated about 1% of the U.S. market," Aharoni said. He added that the company became profitable shortly after generating its first revenues.

"We're fighting hard to stay small and use AI as much as possible," Aharoni said.

Founded in 2022 by Tomer Aharoni and Alon Ezer, Rylo is a unique startup in Israel that uses AI to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It focuses on converting speech to text and text to speech in real time.

Its app allows users to make phone calls on their own without needing a call center in between. During calls, speech is instantly turned into written text so users can read it. They can reply by typing or speaking, and if they type, the app converts their text into spoken voice for the other person to hear.
