Starboard Maritime Intelligence, a New Zealand-based ocean security startup, has raised NZ$23 million (US$13.8 million) in its Series A funding round.

The Series A round was co-led by Altered Capital. New investors like OIF Ventures and King River Capital also joined in.

Other participants included Co: Act Capital, Icehouse Ventures, and the Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation.

The fresh funding will help Starboard expand into North America, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific regions.

It will also be used to improve the platform for use in both classified defense work and commercial maritime operations.

Starboard Maritime Intelligence has a platform that studies different kinds of maritime data, including ship tracking, satellite images, radar, and sensor information.

This helps the system spot unusual or suspicious activity at sea and send real-time alerts.

The company works with governments, defense agencies, and commercial clients in over 30 countries.

It also keeps watch on undersea cable networks and the movement of commercial shipping fleets.

Jonty Kelt from King River Capital and Vu Tran from OIF Ventures will become members of the company’s board.

Starboard is a trusted maritime intelligence company that works with governments, defense agencies, and commercial infrastructure providers around the world. It is active in more than 30 countries and helps protect over 840,000 km of undersea cables.

The company uses sovereign-friendly technology that combines satellite data, sensor inputs, and contextual information with its own AI to give real-time insights about maritime activity.

From securing undersea infrastructure to supporting important decisions in defense and global trade, Starboard is changing the way governments and industries deal with threats at sea.
