The pan-Asia investment firm CLSA Capital Partners’ specific private equity strategy for Japan, Sunrise Capital KK, has raised $500 million for its most recent fund, Sunrise Capital V.
Within five months, the fund was closed due to oversubscription. According to a company announcement, it obtained backing from current investors, who made up 81% of the total number of commitments.
“The demand for Sunrise V far exceeded the hard cap, which is a remarkable achievement. This is a strong endorsement of Sunrise Capital’s investment strategy and investors’ appetite for opportunities in Japan,” said Megumi Kiyozuka, President and Representative Director at Sunrise Capital KK.
Almost four years after it raised $450 million for Sunrise Capital IV, the first and last closing took place. In 2017, the third fund reached its $400 million hardcap and closed.

To date, it has raised almost $2 billion. Fund V, according to the company, will carry on investing in well-known mid-cap Japanese companies with robust growth prospects.
“We will keep pursuing our dedicated private equity strategy with this additional capital,” Kiyozuka declared.
Fund V obtained commitments from family offices, funds of funds, endowments, foundations, pension plans, financial institutions, and countries in Asia, including Japan, North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
CLSA Capital Partners KK was the previous name of Sunrise Capital KK. Last month, it moved to a new headquarters in Tokyo and changed the name of the company.
Since 2006, the company has made at least fifty investments, comprising both initial and subsequent investments.
