The popular UPI payment system is now getting quicker and easier to use. Starting June 16, UPI transactions will take about half the time to go through. More updates are coming in August to make payments safer and reduce delays during peak hours.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is upgrading the UPI system to make payments faster. According to a circular from April 26, 2025, all banks and payment apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm must upgrade their systems to respond more quickly during transactions.
Now, things like sending money, checking payment status, or reversing a transaction will take just 10 to 15 seconds instead of 30 seconds. Also,Verifying UPI IDs or mobile numbers will be done in just 10 seconds, making the whole process faster and easier for users.
“These revisions are intended to improve the customer experience,” NPCI said in the notice. “Members are required to ensure that they make the necessary changes in their systems so that responses are handled within the revised time limits.”
“If the members have any dependency/configuration changes at partner /merchant’s end, then the same also has to be taken care of accordingly.”
The goal is to create a digital payment system that is faster, smarter, and more reliable.
With better controls and quicker responses, NPCI wants to make UPI easier and more trustworthy for the many people in India using digital payments.
As digital payments grow, these upgrades are essential to keep the UPI system ready for the future and make sure it can handle more users without any problems.
