Virtusa Strengthens Chip Design Capabilities with Acquisition of SmartSoC Solutions

Virtusa, a product and platform engineering company, announced on Wednesday that it has bought Bengaluru-based SmartSoC Solutions, a firm that works on semiconductor engineering and chip design. The price of the deal was not shared.

The US-based company said this acquisition will help it become stronger in AI and chip design, allowing it to better serve the rising global demand for advanced silicon technology.

Virtusa said that integrating SmartSoC’s capabilities in silicon design, verification, and embedded systems engineering will strengthen its ability to capitalize on the rapidly rising demand for advanced silicon.

“The acquisition of SmartSoC is transformational for Virtusa,” Nitesh Banga, chief executive officer of Virtusa, said in a statement. “It immediately establishes us as a key player in the high-growth semiconductor engineering space, completing our vision for a full-stack offering that can serve clients from the foundational silicon layer all the way through to the customer application.”

“Our combined strengths create a unique market proposition: a comprehensive, end-to-end digital engineering partner with chip-to-cloud capabilities,” Desareddy said. He added that Virtusa’s global scale, deep relationships with Fortune 100 clients, and digital engineering heritage would allow the company to accelerate its growth, expand service offerings, and bring value to the world’s leading semiconductor and technology companies.

Banga explained that as AI models become more advanced and companies worldwide invest more in data centers, it will be increasingly important for firms to have their own chip design expertise.

With this acquisition, Virtusa now has a semiconductor engineering footprint in India. It also improves the company’s global operations by adding SmartSoC’s teams based in Bengaluru, Hubli, and Hyderabad.

The deal adds more than 1,400 skilled engineers with expertise in VLSI, physical design, and embedded software.

SmartSoC’s leadership team, headed by CEO Bharath Desareddy, will stay on to manage project delivery and work with clients. All ongoing projects, contracts, and service agreements will continue as they are.
