Workato, a leader in agentic orchestration, has launched the AI Institute Alliance in Singapore. This is an important step to develop AI talent in the country.
The alliance works with education partners like Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore University of Social Sciences, and the National University of Singapore.
Its goal is to train the next generation of workers in AI and automation skills, helping them be ready for jobs and contribute to the economy.
In a welcome speech, Simon Chesterman, Senior Director of AI Governance at AI Singapore and Vice Provost at the National University of Singapore, talked about “The University Disrupted: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” He discussed the opportunities and challenges universities and students face, and how education is evolving in an economy being transformed by AI.
“As AI disrupts the traditional model of higher education, universities can benefit from collaboration with industry to ensure that our graduates have the skills both to survive and to thrive in this brave new world,” said Chesterman.
“That means understanding the potential and the limitations of the latest technology, as well as having the adaptability and resilience to identify and seize the next big thing. It also means accepting that you will never truly finish your education, we all need to be lifelong learners.”
The launch event also included a panel discussion called “Bridging Education and Enterprise: Preparing the Next Generation of AI Leaders.” The discussion looked at industry views on AI skills gaps and preparing the workforce. It was led by Carter Busse, CIO of Workato, with panelists Colin Yip, Regional Head of IT, SEA at PSA, and Miguel Ho, Head of Process Automation at FairPrice Group.
This partnership continues Workato’s work in Singapore’s education sector. The company has already trained over 3,000 college students in basic automation and integration skills and is now expanding to teach advanced, enterprise-level automation skills to both students and educators.
By connecting students directly with industry, the collaboration aims to meet global hiring needs and close the skills gap in AI and automation technologies.
Over the past three years, Workato has helped connect industry partners and customers with emerging tech talent through its training programs. For example, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA Singapore) hired six Workato-certified students and a lecturer from Nanyang Polytechnic to improve intern onboarding and offboarding and create important IT automations.
Following PSA Singapore’s success, NTUC FairPrice Group is also involving certified students in its Digital HR project. The project uses FairPrice’s employee app, MyApp, for staff to request Flexible Work Arrangements. Workato handles records, API integrations, and related processes, making it easier to follow Ministry of Manpower rules while improving convenience for employees.
