Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia), a subsidiary of the Chinese multinational conglomerate Huawei, and Maxis, a telecommunications company established in Malaysia, announced a strategic collaboration on the establishment of a Joint Innovation Centre in Malaysia.
In a statement, Maxis stated that the center’s primary goal was to develop 5G-Advanced technology in order to investigate and create novel approaches that enhance customer satisfaction, operational effectiveness, speed of deployment, industry use cases, and cultivate domestic talent for business and industrial endeavours.
The partnership’s overall goals are to promote technology and solidify Malaysia’s standing in the world of telecommunications.
As part of their partnership, Maxis and Huawei Malaysia will investigate gigabit capacity improvements to facilitate 5G/5G-Advanced technologies such mobile edge computing, network slicing, end-to-end network orchestration, RedCap, and passive-IoT, as well as mobile network expansions.
In order to maximise network operating savings, Maxis and Huawei Malaysia will also investigate the application of digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).
“Earlier this year in February we were the first to showcase 5G-Advanced for the public not only for the nation but also region, The continued collaboration with Huawei is one of the many ways we are supporting Malaysia’s digital ambitions,” said Goh Seow Eng, Chief Executive Officer of Maxis. With this latest collaboration we want to take full advantage of 5G-Advanced by building up human capital alongside commercialized innovation for enterprises and industries, As the country’s leading integrated telco, we look forward to the next evolution of connectivity and the economic benefits it will bring to our country,” he added.
The partnership, according to the announcement, would concentrate on developing domestic talent in Malaysia, with a focus on college students and the local labour force.

The collaboration intends to provide Malaysian people with the necessary skills to prosper in the fast changing telecommunications and technology sector through various training programs, research and development projects, and academia-industry collaborations.

Maxis also demonstrated a number of 5G-Advanced applications and their practical implications at the MCY Summit 2024. These included remote classroom instruction for education, remote diagnosis and rescue for healthcare, and autonomous smart sorting and assembly for manufacturing.

It should be mentioned that Maxis and Huawei Malaysia have a long history of working together to promote the uptake of mobile network technology.
Both firms have kept showcasing the enormous potential of 5G-Advanced technology for the economy after successfully organising the first 5G-Advanced technology trial display in Southeast Asia in February.
