
QuamCore, a deep-tech startup from Israel, has raised $26 million in a Series A funding round to speed up its work on building a million-qubit quantum processor—a major step toward making quantum computers more powerful and scalable.
This brings the company’s total funding to $35 million, which includes a $4 million grant from the Israel Innovation Authority that doesn’t require giving up any company ownership.
The Series A round was led by Sentinel Global, with support from Arkin Capital and existing investors Viola Ventures, Earth & Beyond Ventures, Surround Ventures, Rhodium, and qbeat.
QuamCore says it has created and tested a full design for a system that can scale superconducting quantum computers up to 1 million qubits, all within a single cryostat (a super-cold chamber).
This would be a big breakthrough, as current industry leaders like Google and IBM can only reach about 5,000 qubits per cryogenic unit.
“From day one, we focused on the minimum viable system to unlock real-world quantum advantage, and that number is 1 million qubits,” said Alon Cohen, CEO of QuamCore. “We chose to radically rethink the architecture of the most mature and performant platform: superconducting qubits.”
Instead of creating a completely new type of qubit, QuamCore is focusing on improving how existing superconducting qubits are used. These qubits are already seen as the most advanced and practical option in quantum computing.
QuamCore’s main innovation is placing the control systems inside the same ultra-cold chamber (cryostat) as the qubits. Normally, processors are connected to external controllers with lots of cables, which creates heat and makes scaling difficult. By removing those cables, QuamCore reduces the heat and makes it easier to build much larger quantum systems.
A key feature of QuamCore’s system is built-in error correction, which is crucial for creating reliable, fault-tolerant quantum computers.
Although the quality of individual qubits has improved, the industry is still struggling to scale up, as adding more qubits makes systems much more complex.
With the new funding, QuamCore plans to go from simulations to actually building its first processors, set up a dedicated quantum lab, and expand its team and operations.
QuamCore’s leadership team combines strong expertise in quantum physics, superconducting technology and large-scale semiconductor development.
CEO Alon Cohen, co-founder of the EyeC Radar Group at Mobileye (Intel), served as the chief architect and head of the EyeC Radar algorithm group shaping it into a core technology for autonomous vehicle perception.
QuamCore’s top team includes some of Israel’s leading experts in quantum computing and superconducting systems.
CTO Prof. Shay Hacohen-Gourgy is a professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and has over 15 years of experience in experimental quantum research. His work on superconducting circuits and quantum measurement has been published in top journals like Nature.
Chief Scientist Prof. Serge Rosenblum is a top researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science, with more than 15 years of experience in quantum technologies. His research has appeared in major journals like Science.
Both professors did their postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley and Yale before returning to Israel seven years ago. Since then, they have built the country’s top labs for superconducting quantum research at their respective universities.
Senior Advisor Prof. Eby G. Friedman, from the University of Rochester, is a world expert in superconducting digital circuits. He has authored or co-authored over 600 papers and patents and has helped drive significant progress in high-performance digital superconducting technology.
