Akamai Acquires Israeli AI Browser Security Startup LayerX for $205 Million in Cash

Akamai Technologies is buying Israeli cybersecurity startup LayerX Security for about $205 million in cash.

LayerX Security develops tools that help companies control and secure the use of AI in web browsers. It also offers secure enterprise browser (SEB) technology to protect employees and company data while working online.

LayerX’s technology adds security directly in the browser, where employees now do a large part of their work. This includes using AI tools like generative AI, SaaS-based AI apps, and AI agents.

The acquisition supports Akamai’s Zero Trust security strategy. It also helps companies deal with a major cybersecurity challenge in 2026: keeping track of and controlling how AI tools are used inside businesses.

LayerX works differently from enterprise browsers that force employees to switch to a new browsing tool. Instead, it works on top of the browsers people already use. This means companies can improve security without changing how employees work or forcing them to learn a new system.

The platform is also built to support new AI-based browsers and tools, including emerging ones like Atlas and Comet.

“Our customers are adopting AI at an unprecedented pace, and the message we hear from them is clear: existing security tools do not provide sufficient visibility into how employees use AI tools and what information they share with large language models,” said Ofer Wolf, SVP & GM Enterprise Security Group at Akamai and the company’s Israel site leader. “The acquisition of LayerX adds a layer of control to Akamai at the point of use itself, enabling organizations to adopt AI quickly without compromising security or compliance.”

“Securing human and agentic AI usage has become one of the defining challenges in enterprise security,” said Or Eshed, CEO and co-founder of LayerX. “We’re giving enterprises the foundation to deploy AI safely at a global scale by bringing LayerX’s technology together with Akamai’s Zero Trust portfolio and the world’s most distributed edge platform.”

The company is also growing its presence in Israel. It is hiring new employees in areas like research and development, product teams, and information security.
