SUMMARY

  • Bekia has raised $765,000 in Seed funding, led by Madica, with Catalyst Fund and Jambaar Capital also participating.
  • The Egyptian startup digitises waste collection by connecting households with collectors and tracking the weight, grade and payment of recyclable materials.
  • Bekia will use the funding to expand its engineering team, launch Bekia Next, its B2B software product, and test its model in a second African market.

What is Bekia?

Founded in 2019 by Alaa Afifi, Bekia operates a digital platform that connects households with waste collectors. The platform records the weight, grade and payment for collected recyclable materials, helping create a traceable supply chain between households, collectors and businesses.

Bekia started with a consumer app that allows households to schedule waste pickups. Collectors weigh the materials at the time of collection and payments are made through bank accounts or digital wallets.

The company says it has diverted more than 25,000 tonnes of waste from landfills, served more than 100,000 customers, and enabled over 2,400 people to earn through its network.

Funding Details

Bekia raised $765,000 in Seed funding in a round led by Madica. Catalyst Fund, which first invested in Bekia in 2023, returned for the latest round, while Jambaar Capital also participated.

The new investment will support Bekia's next stage of product and market expansion, with a focus on its B2B offering.

How Will Bekia Use the Funding?

Bekia will use the fresh capital to expand its engineering team and bring Bekia Next to market.

The company plans to launch Bekia Next in October 2026. The B2B software product will use Bekia's collection data to provide verified CO₂-avoidance certificates for corporate customers using established carbon accounting methods.

Bekia will also begin testing its business model in a second African market.

Who founded Bekia

Bekia was founded by Alaa Afifi, a computer science graduate of Cairo University, in 2019. The company is based in Egypt and focuses on bringing digital tools and formal processes to the recycling and waste collection sector.

Its revenue comes from enterprise contracts, household collections and refurbished electronics, with the refurbished electronics business generating its first revenue in June 2026.

Market and Business Growth

Bekia operates in Egypt's fragmented recycling market, where much of the collection activity is handled through informal networks. The company has grown more than sevenfold since 2023 and says enterprise retention is above 95%.

Its platform is designed to give businesses access to records covering recyclable materials, including suppliers, weight, grade and payment. This data is also being used to build Bekia's new B2B software offering.

What Happens Next?

Bekia will focus on launching Bekia Next, strengthening its engineering team and testing its model in another African market. The company will continue expanding its digital recycling platform for households, collectors and businesses.
