Lebanon-based medical technology company Cairn Surgical raised $4.5M in Series A2 financing.Morningside Ventures led it.

The company plans to utilize the money to execute a limited commercial launch of the technology in a few European regions and finish the now-enrolling Breast Cancer Locator (BCLTM) pivotal study in the United States.

Under the direction of CEO David Danielsen, CairnSurgical is leveraging patient imaging data and 3D printing technologies that are commercially accessible in Europe and being investigated in a crucial trial in the United States to build patient-specific guides.

Its BCL (breast cancer locator) technology is made to allow for accurate tumor localization and removal. For maximum accuracy, the BCL System is customized for every patient and is based on an MRI of their breast in the surgery position when they are supine.

The BCL System is a specially designed, 3D-printed form that fits the patient’s breast precisely and is meant to direct the surgeon to the edges and borders of the tumor. The surgeon is also given an interactive 3D computer model of the breast tumor that displays the tumor’s size, shape, and location.

About 20% of the time, current breast cancer localization procedures do not yield the information needed to ensure exact excision of the entire tumor, which is the main reason why breast conserving surgery (BCS) does not always succeed in removing the entire tumor.

“We are delighted to have the continued support of Morningside Ventures, who believes in our vision of improving both outcomes for breast cancer patients and the healthcare economics of breast cancer surgery,” said Cairn Surgical CEO David Danielsen. “By giving breast cancer surgeons detailed and critical information that they don’t have today, we intend to transform the surgical experience and through that, improve the patient experience, reducing the need for reexcision surgery.”
