Discovered Materials Raises $9 Mn Seed Funding to Develop AI-Driven Materials for Advanced Chips

Discovered Materials, a deep-tech startup, has raised US$9 Mn (around Rs 85 crore) in a Seed funding round led by Lightspeed India Partners.

The funding round also included Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and angel investors such as Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar.

The company will use the new funding to grow its team, expand its laboratory, and scale its AI-powered research agents.

"AI is creating unprecedented demand for better chips, but progress is increasingly constrained by how slowly new materials reach production. Akash and Advaith bring together a rare combination of deep materials science expertise and frontier AI engineering, enabling them to compress years of materials R&D into days," said Hemant Mohapatra, Partner at Lightspeed India Venture Partners. “We're excited to partner with Discovered Materials as they build the future of semiconductor innovation, starting with a very urgent wedge on better heat dissipation from increasingly hotter chips.”

"Advances in compute have driven most of technological progress over the last 50 years, but chips today are at least 10,000x less power-efficient than the human brain," said Akash Ramdas, co-founder of Discovered Materials. "New materials are how we close that gap - in the last 3 months, we have made new thermal materials that match the performance of products that the world’s largest chemical companies took years to develop."

Discovered Materials is an AI-powered deep-tech startup working on new materials for semiconductor chips. The company uses AI to find materials that can help make advanced chips more efficient.

One of the company’s main goals is to solve the problem of heat in powerful AI chips. Modern GPUs can produce heat levels of around 140 W/cm², making heat management a major challenge for data centres.

Discovered Materials is developing materials that can help chips remove heat more quickly. These materials could also support technologies such as 3D chip stacking, which allows multiple layers of chips to be placed on top of each other.
