Indonesia-based eFishery is an agritech startup that focuses on revolutionizing the Indonesian aquaculture market. It all began when eFishery founder Gibran Huzaifah came up with a solution after seeing an opportunity. Starting from a rented house, this college startup journey is now skyrocketing with a valuation of $ 1.4 billion.
Gibran Huzaifah- eFishery
Meet an inspiring young Indonesian entrepreneur, Gibran Huzaifah Asmi El Farizy, the founder and CEO of eFishery. Gibran completed his graduation in the course of Bachelor of Science, in Biology at Institut Teknologi Bandung from 2007 to 2012.
During his college days, Gibran started his entrepreneurial journey with eFishery. But the best part of his story is that he didn’t stop himself from learning. Huzaifah wanted to improve his business skills, and that’s why he took another two special courses. In 2019, he attended a program at Harvard Business School to learn how to grow a business.
Then, in 2023, he took 2nd course at Stanford University to learn about new ideas and how to make his business grow even more.
Why eFishery?
During the college days of Gibran, he once was attending a lecture at Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology. At the time of the lecture, his professors said that in the next 5 to 10 years, fish and catfish will become a common part of dining in the food sector. Many hotels and restaurants will start serving fish, including catfish, as part of their menu.
During the course, he also discovered that dory fish is among the most frequently consumed freshwater fish in Europe and the United States. His professor’s lecture sparked an idea in his mind.
This was the time when he decided to begin his entrepreneurial journey, launching a startup and moving into catfish rearing.
What inspired him to make a difference?
In-depth research, Gibran found a significant gap. He discovered that 811 million people still struggle with hunger around the world in 2023, which is a very high number. Before the COVID pandemic, there were already predictions that almost 660 million people would be hungry by 2030. But the pandemic has made this problem much worse.
However, Gibran knew that Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing businesses that has the potential to play a vital role in addressing global food security issues.
This inspired him to combat world hunger by using Aquaculture to its fullest capacity.
What does eFishery do?
Indonesia-based eFishery was founded by Gibran Huzaifah in 2013. This is the first Aquaculture Technology Company in Asia that develops innovations in the aquaculture field.
eFishery is an all-in-one platform that supports fish and shrimp farmers by providing them everything at a one place: including feed, financial resources and market access.
Gibran and his team are dedicated to working with the goal of creating an aquaculture ecosystem in Indonesia that benefits farmers, consumers and all other stakeholders sustainably and beneficially.
It is estimated that the demand for animal protein will increase by up to 52% worldwide by 2050. His continuous learning behaviour led this fish-tech startup to a unicorn business valued at$1.4 billion. eFishery is growing together with over 2,00,000 farmers across 280 cities in Indonesia and with the goal of providing food security through aquaculture, offering an affordable technology solution to solve big problems and to reduce inequality through an inclusive digital economy.
Hats off to eFishery founder Gibran Huzaifah, who never let it become a barrier to his challenges, faced them and always tried to solve them. His behaviour turned his college startup into a Unicorn business.
