FairPrice Team up with Google Cloud to improve retail experiences and operations

Singapore’s FairPrice Group (FPG) has teamed up with Google Cloud to launch its “Store of Tomorrow” program. This plan aims to use the latest cloud and AI technology to improve shopping experiences at FairPrice supermarkets both in stores and online.

They said on Thursday that as part of this program, FPG will use smart shopping carts connected to the cloud, an AI system to help run the store, video analysis inside the store, and other new technology. These tools, built with Google Cloud’s advanced services, will be used at the FairPrice Finest store in Punggol Digital District.

“The past few years have shown that in retail, the only thing that stays the same is how fast customer needs and tastes change.”

“Through our Store of Tomorrow program with Google Cloud and its partner ecosystem, we’re applying interoperable, best-in-class gen AI and data analytics capabilities to reimagine shopper engagement across physical and digital formats and make things easier on the experience and wallet for our customers,” said Vipul Chawla, Group Chief Executive Officer, FairPrice Group.

Right now, FairPrice Finest at Sengkang Grand Mall is testing cloud-connected shopping carts called “Smart Carts.” These carts help shoppers find their way around the store, show special deals on nearby products, and suggest items based on what they need.

To make shopping easier and more flexible, FPG plans to introduce in-store biometric payments using Google Cloud technology. They have also connected their shopping app with MyInfo for a smoother experience.

These changes will help customers in special government support programs—like seniors, the Pioneer and Merdeka generations, and those with CHAS Blue or Orange cards. They won’t need to carry their physical cards to get discounts at FairPrice supermarkets anymore.

Besides Smart Carts, FPG has also created Grocer Genie, a helpful online tool that uses AI to manage store operations. This tool is an important part of their Store of Tomorrow program and was developed together with Google Cloud and partners Tata Consultancy Services and FlutterFlow.

FPG will also use a new video analytics system that combines Google Cloud’s Vision AI and Gemini models with their current CCTV cameras and the Grocer Genie tool. This will help improve how they run their stores.

“FairPrice Group’s Store of Tomorrow program shows how AI technology can help stores connect better with customers and make running the store easier.”

“Special AI tools are helping to automate routine jobs, make staff work better, and improve the experience for customers,” said Karan Bajwa, President of Google Cloud Asia Pacific.

He said the partnership with Vipul and his team will keep creating and using smart AI solutions that make life better, more enjoyable, and more useful for people living in Singapore.

“The sheer ambition of FairPrice Group’s vision coupled with their relentless commitment to implementation at speed and scale is forging the blueprint for the future of retail not just in Singapore but internationally,” he added.
