Malaysia-based GreatAsic Technology, a company that designs specialized computer chips for advanced technologies, has raised US$6.9 million in a pre-Series A funding round.
The investment was led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, with participation from Ehsan Kapital and Gobi Partners. The funding will help the company continue developing high-performance custom chip solutions for future technologies.
The funding marks an important step in Malaysia’s goal of moving beyond semiconductor assembly and testing to becoming a stronger player in chip design and development.
The new funding will be used to hire more engineers, expand the company’s operations, and speed up the development of its upcoming chip projects for data centers, automotive technology, and edge AI applications.
“Malaysia has world‑class engineering talent and a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity to design, not just build, the chips that power the AI era,” said Ong Chin Hu, GreatAsic’s founder and chief executive. “This funding lets us hire engineers, expand operations and accelerate our planned ASIC projects, and build a Malaysian semiconductor design ecosystem that endures.”
GreatAsic is led by an experienced team with many years of expertise in the semiconductor industry. Founder Ong has previously worked in senior roles at Intel, Marvell, and StarFive, while co-founder and CTO Michael Liew Woon Chin has held technical leadership positions at Broadcom, Intel, Marvell, and StarFive.
The team has successfully designed and launched multiple chip projects and has experience in large-scale chip production. This strong industry background gives GreatAsic a proven track record and makes it more than just a typical early-stage startup.
Vertex Ventures’s Chan Yip Pang framed the investment as a bet on both the team and Malaysia’s broader strategic shift. “We have known this team for several years… For decades the country has assembled and tested the world’s semiconductors; designing them is a far harder and more valuable undertaking, and few teams in the region are equipped to take it on,” Chan said.
GreatAsic is a chip design company that creates custom, high-performance semiconductor solutions for future technologies. Based in Malaysia, the company has a skilled engineering team with experience in designing, developing, and successfully launching advanced chips.
Its chip solutions are used in a wide range of industries, including consumer electronics, industrial automation, data centers, and edge computing. By focusing on quality, innovation, and fast development, GreatAsic aims to help power the next generation of smart devices and technology.
