Horizon Robotics and Volkswagen Group have announced a partnership which focused on advanced smart driving technology and built around Horizon’s all-in-one driving system called HSD (Horizon SuperDrive™).
As part of Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” strategy, the HSD system will be rolled out through CARIZON, a joint venture between Horizon Robotics and CARIAD, Volkswagen’s software unit.
This partnership will help bring intelligent driving features faster to Volkswagen cars in China, which support the company’s shift towards smart mobility.

The two companies first teamed up in 2022, making this one of the first deep collaborations between a global carmaker and a Chinese smart driving firm. In November 2023, CARIZON was officially launched and now has over 500 engineers working on advanced full-stack driving systems. A Level 2+ smart driving system, based on Horizon’s Journey 6 chip, is already being tested and is set to debut in 2026 in a new electric vehicle built on Volkswagen’s CEA platform.
Horizon’s HSD system uses the powerful Journey 6P chip and combines software and hardware for a smooth, human-like driving experience. It handles complex situations like crowded intersections, narrow U-turns and mixed-use roads with ease. The system also includes a high-quality visual interface, inspired by top video games which showing how it understands traffic in real time. This helps build trust and improves the overall user experience.
As China’s auto industry rapidly adopts smart driving tech, this stronger collaboration brings together Volkswagen’s manufacturing strength and Horizon’s tech expertise, to help Volkswagen keep pace with China’s fast-moving innovation and grow in the smart mobility space.
