Japan-Based Isuzu Motors Strategic Partnership with Applied Intuition

Silicon Valley-based vehicle software supplier Applied Intuition, Inc. and Japan-based commercial vehicle manufacturer Isuzu Motors Ltd. announced a strategic Partnership to expedite Isuzu’s aim to develop and deploy autonomous trucking solutions.

By streamlining commercial logistics, the alliance will boost economic and social growth and address essential driver shortages.

In Japan, overworked truck drivers are a serious public health concern; approximately 84% of drivers experience linked health issues. According to recent studies, 34.3% of deaths attributed to overwork were caused by truck drivers.

As a result, the Japanese government updated the Labor Standards Law to regulate the total number of hours worked year at 3,300, including breaks. In an industry where a 36% reduction in drivers is already predicted by 2030, this has sparked worries about driver shortages. Known as “The 2024 Problem,” it poses a risk to supply chains and Japan’s standing as a country that provides good service.

“Working with Applied Intuition will greatly advance autonomous driving technology development and provide a strong foundation for Isuzu’s plan to launch an autonomous trucking business,” said Shinsuke Minami, representative director, president and COO of Isuzu Motors Ltd. “This strategic partnership will serve as a strong driving force for our goal to create and offer solutions to challenges faced by our customers and society as a whole.”

Thanks to the agreement, advanced autonomous driving technology will be introduced in Japan, expanding logistics options and mitigating driver shortages. With the aim of making autonomous driving solutions a new business pillar, Isuzu Motors Ltd. released its mid-term management strategy, “ISUZU Transformation – Growth to 2030 (IX),” in April 2024. With the needs of its clients in mind, Applied Intuition’s technology is created and developed to help automotive OEMs create intelligent and safe autonomous systems. This guarantees that OEMs have the resources they need to develop, validate, and implement autonomous systems more quickly.

“Applied Intuition is in the business of enabling our OEM customers to deploy next-generation technology in their vehicles. In this case, we’re advancing commercial trucking autonomy with Isuzu,” said Qasar Younis, co-founder and CEO of Applied Intuition. “What’s different about Applied Intuition versus other companies in our ecosystem is we don’t succeed if our customers don’t succeed. Because of that, we look forward to helping one of the largest truck OEMs in the world simultaneously address needs in commercial trucking and develop in-house capabilities.”
