Japan’s Every WiLL Raises $821K to Expand Unmanned Parcel Pickup Network

Japan-based logistics startup Every WiLL has raised US$1 million in seed funding to expand its network of unmanned parcel pickup points across the country.

The Tokyo-based company raised the funding through a third-party allotment led by ONBOARD, East Ventures, and the Japan Startup Support Association. The company also received additional support through government subsidies and bank loans.

Every WiLL’s Unmanned Parcel Pickup Network

Every WiLL operates Toriiku, a network of unmanned parcel pickup locations designed to make last-mile delivery more efficient.

The company sets up Toriiku pickup points in unused spaces of around 1.5 tsubo, or approximately 5 square meters, including locations in shopping centres, train stations, and public buildings.

Instead of delivering parcels separately to individual homes, delivery companies can send multiple packages to one pickup location. Customers can then collect their parcels at a convenient time.

Why Every WiLL Is Expanding Now

Japan’s growing e-commerce market has increased pressure on the country’s delivery infrastructure. At the same time, a shortage of delivery drivers has made last-mile logistics more challenging.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is also promoting unattended delivery as part of efforts to improve logistics efficiency.

Every WiLL said its Toriiku network is aimed at addressing these challenges by combining shared pickup infrastructure with unmanned delivery.

How Will Every WiLL Use the Funding?

Every WiLL plans to use the new funding to:
  • Expand the installation of Toriiku pickup points
  • Develop and scale the Jitaku de Toriiku app
  • Create new products using logistics data
  • Strengthen its team
  • Expand partnerships with municipalities, retailers, delivery companies, and e-commerce businesses

The company aims to increase the availability of unmanned parcel pickup infrastructure while developing additional services around logistics data.

Investor Support

Yuki Takeuchi, co-founder of ONBOARD, said the firm will support Every WiLL in its efforts to make Toriiku a standard part of Japan’s delivery infrastructure.

Takeuchi also highlighted the growing use of unattended delivery in Japan while pointing to continued concerns around parcel theft and delivery errors.
