Melazyme raises $2 million seed round led by SeaX Ventures

Melazyme, a precision fermentation startup that develops high-performance functional biomolecules, has raised US$2 million in a seed funding round.

The round was led by SeaX Ventures, with participation from Stellaris Venture Partners and Plug and Play Ventures. The company will use the funding to improve its platform, expand production capacity, and support the early commercial launch of its target molecules.

A key part of Melazyme’s business strategy is melanin, a natural biopolymer known for its strong UV protection, chemical stability, and ability to bind with metal ions. Although scientists have studied melanin for many years, producing a reliable and large-scale supply for commercial use has remained difficult.

Melazyme aims to solve this problem with its production platform, which can create commercially usable melanin with customizable properties for different industries. The company plans to use it in areas such as cosmetics, protective coatings, advanced materials, filtration systems, and environmental cleanup solutions.

“Our platform is built around the ability to tune molecular function for specific applications. With melanin, that means the same underlying material can be engineered to solve entirely different problems across industries,” said Gandhi, co-founder and CEO of Melazyme.

“Perumal and Bonney bring rare experience building and scaling precision fermentation companies,” said Dr Kid Parchariyanon, managing partner of SeaX Ventures. “This is the kind of founding team and platform-level technology that comes along once in a generation — and SeaX is proud to back it.”

Founded in 2025, Melazyme is developing a fermentation platform focused on producing high-value functional biomolecules instead of large-scale commodity products.

The company’s patent-pending technology covers both its production process and the various applications of its products across different industries.
