A Chinese solar power business is building a photovoltaic (PV) power facility in Bacolod City, Negros Oriental, as part of the government’s attempts to increase the supply capacity of renewable energy in the Philippines.

The China Energy Engineering Group Shanxi Electric Power Engineering Co., Ltd. officially launched the construction phase of its first photovoltaic power project in the Philippines with a groundbreaking and mobilisation ceremony for the 65 megawatt (MW) Areco Solar PV Power Plant Project in Bacolod City.

A two-kilometer transmission line and a 22-kilovolt (kV)/69-kV substation will be built as part of the 50 MW Areco Solar PV Power Plant Project. The transformer substations will be expanded in distance.

“Once completed, it will significantly increase the energy supply in the Philippines, promote the transformation of the country’s energy structure, and contribute to social and economic development,” China Energy said in a news release on Friday. It will also promote the realization of the goal of the national renewable energy program in the Philippines,” it added.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) of 2023 that the government is increasing its efforts to boost renewable energy in the nation by issuing over a hundred contracts for renewable energy.

According to President Marcos, the administration wants to raise the proportion of renewable energy in the mix used to generate electricity by 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040. (PNA)
