Samsung in Talks to Shift Production from Vietnam to India

Samsung is in talks with Indian manufacturers to move some of its production from Vietnam. Tech companies use the US government’s three-month tariff pause to rethink operations and shift production to countries with lower tariffs. In FY24, Samsung exported $52 billion of smartphones, with Vietnam as a central manufacturing hub.

Amid the US’s retaliatory tariffs on Vietnam, South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly looking to move some of its smartphone and electronics production to India.

According to Moneycontrol, the company has started discussions with Indian manufacturers to explore the potential shift from Vietnam.

“Yes, discussions have started with Indian EMS players, including existing partners. Not just Samsung, but other companies with operations in Vietnam are also exploring moving some production to India,” a source reportedly said.

Earlier this month, the US government imposed a 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods and a 10% levy on Indian goods as part of President Donald Trump’s retaliatory tariffs against trading partners.

However, on April 9, the Trump administration announced a 90-day pause on tariffs, excluding China. Reports suggest that tech companies use this window to reassess their operations and shift production to countries with lower tariffs.

India could see a significant benefit if Samsung moves some of its manufacturing there. For context, Samsung exported $52 billion of smartphones in FY24, with Vietnam being a key manufacturing hub.

This development comes as several global tech giants are flocking to India to avoid high US tariffs on neighboring countries like China and to take advantage of the Indian government’s production-linked incentives (PLIs) for manufacturers.

A day earlier, reports emerged that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is in advanced talks to move part of its Pixel smartphone production from Vietnam to India. The company is said to have completed its first round of discussions with contract manufacturers like Dixon Technologies and Foxconn two weeks ago.

Last month, reports said Apple’s assembler Foxconn plans to double iPhone output in India to 25–30 million units this year.

Meanwhile, Chinese automaker BYD reportedly plans a $10 billion EV plant near Hyderabad to produce batteries and electric cars.
