Universal Quantum Secures $100Mn to Grow Quantum Computing Research

A company from the UK called Universal Quantum has collected over $100 million in a Series A funding round. This money is meant to develop computing technology and help build a research and development centre in Singapore.

This funding round was led by a US deep-tech investor named DCVC and another investor called Firgun Ventures that focuses on computing. A company from Singapore called EDBI, which's part of the Singapore Economic Development Board also joined the funding along with other worldwide investors.

Money to Help Build the Singapore R&D Hub and Grow Around the World

Universal Quantum wants to use the new money to create its R&D centre in Singapore. This will be the companys one outside of Europe. The company will also grow its work in the United States and Japan. Help the hub it already has in Hamburg, Germany.

EDBIs investment shows how Singapore is trying to become stronger in technologies like quantum computing. The new centre is expected to support the research and technology work that Universal Quantum does in the area.

The company says this is the Series A funding round ever raised by a UK-based quantum computing company.

Universal Quantums Trapped-Ion Technology

Universal Quantum started in 2018. It makes quantum computers using trapped-ion technology. This method uses charged atoms, called ions to process quantum data.

The company wants to make computers that can be broken into parts and expanded to handle more complicated computing tasks. It says its technology avoids the lasers and photonic links that some other methods use.

Universal Quantum is also working on a $77 million contract with the German Aerospace Center to build -chip quantum computers.

Leaders and Investors Speak Out

Sebastian Weidt, who is the CEO and co-founder of Universal Quantum said the funding brings together investors from financial centers around the world to help create quantum computers that are useful on a large scale.

James Hardiman from DCVC said the company’s way of designing things helps solve problems when it comes to making ion-trap quantum computing systems bigger.
