GoTo Group, the biggest digital company in Indonesia, and Alibaba Cloud, the tech arm of Alibaba Group, announced on Thursday that GoTo Financial has successfully moved its systems to Alibaba Cloud’s data centers in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The two companies said in a statement that this is an important step in their partnership, which started in September 2024. It’s also a major part of one of the most significant and most complex cloud system moves ever done in Indonesia.
It also helps Indonesia keep control of its data by making sure all the information stays within the country.
Moving to Alibaba Cloud’s secure and fast system is expected to make things run more smoothly, lower costs, and improve service for millions of GoPay users.
GoTo Financial is the part of GoTo that handles digital finance. It’s also the company that runs GoPay, one of Indonesia’s most popular payment services.
GoTo Financial currently helps more than 20 million people make smooth and easy digital payments every month.
“By completing this migration with Alibaba Cloud, we’ve strengthened the core infrastructure that underpins GoTo Financial’s services,
“The transition also reinforces our commitment to Indonesia’s data sovereignty, with all data being held within Indonesia,” said Patrick Walujo, GoTo Group Chief Executive Officer.
“As a result of this, our company is now well positioned for the future as we continue to support millions of Indonesians with trusted, homegrown financial solutions,” he added.
Sean Yuan, Alibaba Cloud’s Regional General Manager for the South Pacific and Japan, said this successful move shows that Alibaba Cloud’s technology can handle big digital changes and support large companies.
“We’re proud to work with GoTo in shaping Indonesia’s digital future and look forward to deepening our partnership,” he added.
The statement said that the project moved GoTo Financial’s main apps to Alibaba Cloud, making it one of the most challenging tech projects ever done in Indonesia.
With over 20 million people using GoTo Financial every month, the system needs to be very stable and able to handle lots of transactions happening at the same time.
To make sure the move went smoothly, the teams from Alibaba Cloud and GoTo worked closely together to build a complete technical solution. This helped keep the business running without interruptions and made sure users didn’t notice any changes.
During the move, Alibaba Cloud gave many tools to help, using special software like Landing Zone and Terraform. This allowed GoTo to set up everything with code, making a strong and stable base for thousands of small services running smoothly.
In May 2025, Alibaba Cloud teamed up with GoTo and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) to hold the Alibaba Cloud GenAI Hackathon. This event helped boost local digital skills and support the country’s economic growth.
