China’s Alibaba Technologies announced new open-source AI models and text-to-video technologies , stepping up its efforts to compete in the rapidly expanding field of generative AI.

The Qwen 2.5 family of large language models, which Alibaba released in May, has their 100 open-source models. Much like their American counterparts, Chinese tech businesses have been making significant investments in generative AI as they compete to create diverse and strong product lines.

As rivals like Baidu and OpenAI have mostly embraced closed-source strategies, Alibaba has embraced a hybrid approach, allocating resources to both open-source and private development in order to expand its assortment of AI products.

It will now face up against major international competitors like OpenAI, which has expressed interest in text-to-video technology, thanks to this move. Jimeng AI, a text-to-video software, was released in August on Apple’s software Store for Chinese customers by ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok.
