Singapore-Based Amazon has Partnered with Anthropic

Recently, the British competition authority said that it had opened an investigation into an alliance between the US e-commerce behemoth Amazon and the US artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.

The action was taken in response to the Competition and Markets Authority’s announcement in April that it was investigating partnerships between artificial intelligence companies and their US major tech partners, Microsoft and Amazon.

The CMA’s action comes after regulators in the US and the EU conducted comparable investigations.

In a statement, the British regulator said it was considering whether the Amazon-Anthropic partnership “has resulted, or may be expected to result, in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services”.

This comes after Amazon invested up to $4 billion in Anthropic, a company creating an AI chatbot that competes with ChatGPT.

Although Anthropic maintained that it was “an independent company,” it pledged to “cooperate with the CMA and provide them a comprehensive understanding commercial collaboration and Amazon’s investment.”
