Israeli startup BAIBYS, led by Firstime Ventures and ROHTO, completed its $4.5 million Series A funding round.

Its autonomous system selects ideal sperm for fertility treatments to improve treatment success and reduce birth defects.

BAIBYS has raised $6.5 million after obtaining $2 million in a Seed round from fertility doctors in Israel and overseas.

BAIBYS was developed in 2020 by Jewish-French male fertility specialist Dr. Nino Guy Cassuto and electro-optics engineer Gal Golov, who had encountered the complex challenges of multiple failed IVF procedures. Gal Golov and Dr. Yaron Silberman are the company’s co-CEOs. It employs eight full-time workers in Ramat Hahayal, Tel Aviv, as well as several part-time workers and experts.

The WHO reports that 96% of sperm cells in healthy men are aberrant. However, current fertility therapies choose sperm from millions essentially arbitrarily without checking for morphological defects. BAIBYS’ AI-based robotic technology automatically selects WHO-compliant sperm based on motility and morphology.

Experts’ thorough sperm selection has boosted success rates and reduced infant abnormalities by 45%. This approach is too time-consuming, subjective, expensive, and requires substantial training to be widely adopted in clinical practice. With BAIBYS, the user just inserts a cartridge with the sperm sample, selects the amount of cells to be extracted, and presses ‘Start.’ The system runs autonomously for several minutes till selection is complete.

“The new partnership, which is not only financial, with a significant corporation like RHOTO opens up enormous possibilities for us in terms of marketing, R&D, and other areas,” said Dr. Yaron Silberman, CEO of BAIBYS. “We will make every effort to leverage this partnership to bring innovative products to market for the benefit of the many couples (1 in 6) suffering from infertility. In the coming months, we will pass significant milestones, with the crowning achievement being the start of sales in Europe later this year, assisted by our seed round investors and their network. We are proud to show the world that an innovative Israeli technology can help couples around the world to have healthy babies, during this challenging period.”

The fertility treatment market was $54.1 billion in 2023 and is predicted to reach $101.8 billion by 2028, growing 14% annually.

The 1899-founded ROHTO is based in Osaka, Japan. The corporation makes and sells pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and nutritional supplements worldwide.
