BYD Sime Motors, Malaysia’s official distributor of BYD vehicles, has partnered with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to promote the country’s low-carbon mobility initiatives.
According to a statement from BYD Sime Motors on Wednesday, the collaboration aims to reduce carbon emissions by accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia.
As part of the partnership, a six-month initiative called “Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT” will be launched, supported by BYD Sime Motors’ partner, Gentari Sdn Bhd through Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd. The program includes the installation of two electric vehicle chargers at the MOT headquarters.
The initiative allows MOT personnel to test drive BYD’s full range of EV models, giving them a firsthand experience of cutting-edge electric mobility.
As part of this initiative, BYD Sime Motors will provide the Ministry of Transport (MOT) with its full range of electric vehicles (EVs), including the BYD SEALION 7, BYD SEAL, BYD ATTO 3 ULTRA, BYD M6, and BYD DOLPHIN.
MOT staff can test drive these vehicles, gaining firsthand experience of their performance, comfort, and convenience. The aim is to increase awareness of electric vehicle (EV) ownership and usability.
Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Sime Motors, said, “BYD Sime Motors is proud to lead Malaysia’s shift to electric mobility with the MOT. We’re committed to supporting the Ministry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Through this hands-on experience, we hope to encourage more people, including government officials, to adopt electric vehicles.”
This initiative goes beyond product testing, helping to pave the way for EV integration in government operations and supporting the move towards a sustainable, low-carbon transportation system.
BYD Sime Motors and Gentari have installed two 22 kw AC chargers at the Ministry’s headquarters in Putrajaya. This installation highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in establishing a reliable and accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Malaysia.
So far, Gentari operates over 530 EV charging points nationwide and is working towards the national goal of 10,000 public chargers by 2025, which aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
Founded in 1995 as a maker of rechargeable batteries, BYD has expanded into several sectors, including automobiles, rail transit, new energy, and electronics. The company now operates over 30 industrial parks in China, the U.S., Canada, Japan, Brazil, Hungary, and India.
BYD’s new energy vehicles are now available in over 70 countries and regions, spanning six continents and over 400 cities.
Sime Motors, a key part of the Sime Group, represents a range of brands, including luxury names such as BMW, Denza, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Porsche, as well as popular brands like Ford, Hyundai, and BYD, along with commercial vehicles. The company operates in ten markets: Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Indonesia.
